"Out of Africa"!
A beautifully hand carved and polished,vintage African lamp. The lamp carved from a single section of a Southern African hard wood known as Grenadilla, also known as African Black wood, a member of the Rosewood family.
Being so dense and heavy, it is a very difficult wood to carve and is renowned for its ability to produce a lustrous polish to the hard smooth surface. As a result of over harvesting, African Black wood is now considered a very rare and threatened species.
The lamp carved as the head and torso of a Southern African man with great attention being given to the facial details, hair and beard. The lamp seated on a circular base. The base detailed with an enamelled, black line finish. The lamp cap of custom made black enamelled bronze.
By oral family tradition, the lamp was hand carved in Southern Africa around 1920. There has been a small loss to the carving at the base of the lamp.
