“There is one fundamental fact about lighting: Where there is no light, there is no beauty.”   Billy Baldwin - Interior Designer

The three decades that followed the formation of the United States are referred to as "The Federal Era" in recognition of the early development of an American national government.  The style of houses and furnishings created during this period were heavily influenced by the neoclassical designs favoured in Great Britain since the 1760’s which stemmed from a renewed interest in classical Greece and Rome.

It was as early as February, 1784, a year after the signing of the peace treaty that ended the Revolutionary War, that the first American ship, “Empress of China”, left New York for Canton.  The trade with China peaking in the early years of the 19th century.

This particular style of Chinese export porcelain was very popular in the United States, especially throughout the 1785-1815 Federal period and was exported as large dinner, tea and coffee services.
