A rare and very decorative, late 19th century, pair of Chinese export, mirror image, antique candle stick lamps. The lamps decorated in a Famille Verte palette of enamels with a vigorous, traditional subject of sparring cockerels.
The cockerels with feathers ruffled, menacingly circling each other, just before the feathers start flying! The cockerel subjects set in a wicker fenced garden with stands of Bok Choi and flowering prunus trees growing in beds of garden flowers.
This subject of fighting cockerels has been a popular Chinese decorative subject for hundreds of years. The ruffled feathers and posturing produce all the colour and movement, the only thing missing is the noise!
The bases of the lamps enamelled with hatched borders, the border with oval reserves of peaches and foliage and singing birds on flowering branches. The lamps with gilded bands above the hatched borders and circling the candlestick tops. The lamps seated in custom made, gold plated, bronze bases.
