G050 Pair Of English Arts-Crafts Maple Wood Candlestick Lamps - Circa 1910

Everything made by man's hands has a form, which must be either beautiful or ugly; beautiful if it is in accord with Nature and helps her; ugly if it is discordant with Nature, and thwarts her; it cannot be indifferent."    William Morris

A tall pair of early 20th century, English Arts and Crafts/Craftsman Design era, polished and waxed maple wood antique candlestick lamps.  The lamps on broad circular bases, the bases standing on padded bun feet.  The candle sticks fitted with matte gold plated bobeches or drip pans.  The lamps with faux candles with matte gold plated bronze candle caps.  The lamps shown with a pleated, cherry red, silk shade suggestion.  The lamps wired with 25w lamp holders.

The Arts and Crafts movement was an international movement in the decorative and fine arts that began in Britain and flourished in Europe and North America between about 1880 and 1920.

It stood for traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often used medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration.  It advocated economic and social reform and was essentially anti-industrial.  It had a strong influence on the arts in Europe until it was displaced by Modernism in the 1930's.  Ideal as buffet lamps for a sideboard.
