"There is currently no western equivalent for a Geisha, they are truly the most impeccable form of Japanese art." Kenneth Champeon, The Floating World
A rare antique, Japanese Kutani, export porcelain, accent lamp modelled as a Bijin (beautiful lady). The Japanese Bijin, often referred to as Geisha, are traditional Japanese female entertainers who act as hostesses. Their skills include various arts such as classical music, dance, games, poetry and witty conversation.
She wears the traditional brightly coloured Japanese Kimono in the Imari colours of iron red, green and pale turquoise. Kimono are large robes, worn with a nagajuban, or under-kimono, the kimono is usually padded and bound to give a straight line to the garment. Kimono are seasonal and the Kimono shown has a watery design of waves, fish and reeds, which indicate this as a summer Kimono, they also range in formality and style.
At her waist she wears an obi in black and white gilded silk. Obi are large waist bands wrapped around the outside of the kimono. These are usually secured with an obi belt and are often the most intricate part of a kimono. The obi is tied at the back in a large bow. On her head, she wears an elaborate traditional broad rimmed head dress. In her right hand she carries a large open fan, which, when folded, is tucked into the obi.
The lamp is in Kutani Shoza export style from the Yoshida kilns, which were established in the early 19th century. These early 20th century Japanese export lamps are considered to be rare, when home electricity during the early years of the 20th century was in its infancy and only available to the most affluent.

Accent lamps are designed to produce a mood, a look or feel in a room, rather than providing a major source of light in a space. In general, an accent lamp is a relatively small lamp, with usually no more than a maximum height of about 20"/50cm including the lamp shade. Accent lamps also serve as decorative accents within a room.
