Rafi and Mildred Mottahedeh were avid collectors of Chinese porcelain and established the Mottahedeh Porcelain Company in the 1950’s.  Many of the company’s productions were derived from Chinese porcelain shapes chosen from their private collection of Chinese antique export pieces.

The company, although based in New York, commissioned its porcelains to be made by the Portuguese company of Vista Alegre and from Italian makers. Mottahedeh is today, a recognised leader in luxury antique reproductions and has produced porcelain for the US President, the US State Department and the American Diplomatic Corps.

Please see the detail illustrating an original pair of early 18th century Chinese vases from which these lamps have been so effectively reproduced.

Accent Lamps.

Accent lamps are designed to produce a mood a look or feel in a room, rather than providing a major source of light in a space.  In general, an accent lamp is a relatively small lamp, with usually no more than a maximum height of about 20"/50cm including the lamp shade.  Accent lamps also serve as decorative accents within a room.

Accent lamps can be placed to produce a softer and more relaxing atmosphere.  Professional interior designers will often employ what is known as “the triangle of light”.  This approach calls for placing accent lamps at three points around the room, with the placement more or less creating a triangle.

Accent lamps also serve as decorative accents within a room.  The lamps do not necessarily have to match but should compliment one another in some manner.
