D046 A Handsome Large English Stoneware Lamp of Heavy Robust Form - Circa 1900

                  Masculine Minimalism

A tall, handsome, English, stoneware antique lamp of heavy, robust form.  The wheel thrown lamp in Chinese Mei Ping shape, the product of a potting studio.  The stoneware glaze with areas of dark and pale brown.  A rustic lamp with real character.  The lamp shown with a pleated, black silk shade suggestion.

Stoneware, which is dense, impermeable and hard enough to resist scratching by a steel point,  is extremely strong and will not absorb water.  It is fired at higher temperatures than earthenware so that the body vitrifies, (ingredients melt and fuse together).

Because stoneware is nonporous, it does not require a glaze; when a glaze is used, it serves a purely decorative function.  Dark coloured stoneware is made from buff, brown and red /clay without added ingredients.  The essence of stoneware is strength and virility, just as that of porcelain is lightness and grace.
