A vintage Wedgwood, pale blue, jasper lamp. The lamp of classic style decorated with white jasper bas-reliefs with figure subjects derived from classical Greek mythology. The figures separated by well defined white jasper laurel trees. These bas-reliefs having been originally modelled for Wedgwood by John Flaxman in 1776-1777.
The bas-relief subjects are:-
Venus, a Roman goddess identified with Aphrodite, originally the goddess of gardens and spring flowers. She was also the mother of the god of love, Cupid.
Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, she is modelled holding a draped garland of flowers.
Sacrifice to peace.
Sacrificial figures in an olive grove.
Selene and the infant Eros.
Ceres and Venus and the infant cupid.
The lamp seated in a custom made, matte gold plated, bronze base, the lamp cap of matte gold plated, bronze. The combination of the pale blue and white jasper combined with the matte gold plated bronze producing a very formal lamp in classic style. The lamps shown with a pleated, ivory silk shade suggestion.
