A very decorative pair of 19th century, Meiji era Japanese jar shaped Imari lamps. The lamps decorated in the traditional palette of Imari enamel colours, iron red and underglaze cobalt blue.
The decorative subjects painted in circular reserves framed in cobalt blue. The central subjects of a large cauldron filled with flowering wisteria, gardenias and chrysanthemums. In the language of flowers in Japanese decorative art, gardenias symbolise a secret or unrequited love, wisteria - immortality and longevity and chrysanthemums – Imperial and the chrysanthemum throne.
The ground of the jars painted with chrysanthemum Mons, flower heads and decorated fan shapes. The high domed, fluted covers decorated as per the jars. The lamps set into fine gold plated rings and seated in well carved, polished, hardwood stands. The lamps shown with a pleated, navy blue silk shade suggestion.
Antique lamps as matched pairs are rather more difficult to acquire, when potential damages/losses over the past 130 plus years, as in this case, are taken into account.
