An outstandingly decorative, vintage, mid 20th century, Chinese red lacquer-ware lamp, the form inspired by a Chinese Fang Hu or square jar shaped bronze, archaic ceremonial vessel.
The lamp with a brocade ground with the top half of the shape framed with a band of “thunder cloud fret”. This ancient decorative device represents clouds and rolling thunder, the pattern symbolizes life giving rain and abundance.
The lower half of the lamp, front and reverse, decorated in relief with a finely detailed subject of a forested, lake side mountain village. The sides of the lamp with a brocade ground and two floral subjects in high relief. Subjects of flowering prunus blossom on old wood and a spray of flowering orchids.
The lamp seated in a custom made, bronze, matte gold plated, rectangular base, the bronze, custom made, lamp cap, matte gold plated.
